As technology advances, more and more things that traditionally were completed in person are now moving to the internet. Driver’s ed is just one of the latest to follow this trend. It’s now easy and affordable to take online driving school for adults from the comfort of your own home! In this guide, we’ll go over the best adult drivers ed courses available online.
While it may seem a bit strange to learn how to drive online, it’s actually not a new concept. Some of the most established adult driving schools have been operating online since the 1990’s, and have served millions of customers. Today, both teen drivers ed and adult drivers ed programs are widely available online, and are superior in many ways to traditional driving school for adults.
If you’re looking for the best adult driver’s ed course, we’ve got you covered. The guide below will help steer you in the right direction (sorry, bad pun) and help you find a good adult driving school for your needs.

Why Take Adult Driver’s Ed Online?
Here’s why it might make sense to complete an online driver’s education course:
Privacy – if you’re embarrassed or nervous to be learning how to drive later in life, there’s no need to be with an online program. You can complete the coursework from home, at your own pace. Some traditional schools will even group adults with teens for the same program – so if you don’t want to be surrounded by 16 year olds, online is the way to go.
Flexibility – online programs allow for ultimate flexibility. You work at your own pace, which makes it easier to fit coursework around your work schedule and other commitments. Break it into 30-minute chunks, or sit down and knock out the course over a weekend – it’s up to you!
Value – online programs can save you a lot of money. While a traditional driving course may run as much as $180 for just the classroom portion, online courses are much cheaper, often in the $20-$50 range.
Time – online adult driver’s ed providers know that your time is valuable, so they design their courses to be as short as possible.
DMV Certified – all of the adult driving schools we recommend are fully DMV certified. This means that their online courses fully meet or exceed DMV requirements for driver’s training. Essentially the online courses give you the same information you’d get from a traditional course, but in a quicker, more convenient way!
What is the Best Adult Drivers Ed Online?
We tested, researched and evaluated most of the services out there that offer adult drivers ed programs. We used a broad set of criteria to make our selections, including how engaging and interesting the courses felt, how many states the program was available in, how smoothly the technology performed, and other factors. Here are the programs we found to provide the best overall value:
Aceable is our pick for the best online adult drivers ed. It’s a relatively new company, but it’s rapidly growing and is one of the most technologically advanced online driving schools out there. Aceable offers DMV-approved courses in adult drivers ed, teen drivers ed, traffic school, defensive driving, and more. Aceable is not yet available nationwide, and currently only serves select states. But, they are raising huge amounts of funding and rapidly expanding, so we expect this to be rolling out into new states regularly.
- 100% online (in-person drive training is completed separately)
- DMV certified in many states

Aceable was our choice for the best adult driver’s ed online for a number of reasons. For one, their courses are highly engaging. They seem to have done a very good job at shaping some fairly dry content into a relatively engaging, interesting course. Some courses are more geared towards teens, but the mix of coursework helps to keep adults engaged and learning as well. Courses are also quite quick, with Aceable’s course offerings typically being as short as legally allowed. It’s also the most technologically advanced course, with a super slick smartphone app and nice 3D interactive animations. Learn more in our Aceable Driver’s Ed review.
There is one big downside, though: Aceable is only available in CA, FL, IL, NV, OH, PA, and TX. If you live in one of these states, Aceable is your best option for driver’s ed for adults. If you live in a state not covered by Aceable, move on to our second pick.
iDriveSafely is one of the largest online driver’s ed program providers out there. They are also considered one of the fastest course providers, as most of their courses are designed to be as quick as legally allowed. More than 5 million people have graduated their programs. They’re an affordable provider, offering simple text-based courses, or optional video courses for a bit more money.
- Very affordable
- 100% online
- Courses can be either text-only or a combination of video and text (video costs more)
- Available in many states
- Online-only – no smartphone app
- Very quick courses
- Over 5 million graduates
- Good customer support
Overall, iDriveSafely is a quick, easy and affordable adult driver’s ed provider. Their courses can be a bit boring, but they are very quick and fairly easy. They are also available in more states than Aceable. Check out our iDriveSafely review to learn more
DriversEd.com is the most established driver’s ed program online. More than 11 million students have passed through DriversEd.com courses. The unique part about this provider is that they provide optional package deals which include in-person drive instructors, alongside the online classroom content. This is optional, but nice to have the option in one place. DriversEd.com is also the most widely available, with courses available in most states. The courses are a bit less engaging than Aceable, but solid nonetheless. We also noticed some clunkiness and crashing issues with their smartphone app, but the web browser version worked well.
- 100% online
- Also offers in-person driver training packages (optional)
- Seems more geared towards teens than adults
- Coursework can be completed on computers or mobile devices
- DMV certified in most states
- More than 11 million satisfied customers
- Complete at your own pace
- 24/7 customer support
Overall, DriversEd.com is a great program that’s very affordable. It’s widely available in most states, but the content seems a bit more geared towards teens than adults. You can learn more in our DriversEd.com review.
